Kansas City Academy of Medicine Records (KC187)
When factions in the Jackson County Medical Society caused some members to feel unwelcome, those members established a new professional organization. The Kansas City Academy of Medicine was founded March 1, 1890 as the Progressive Medical and Social Club. The organization was especially intended for the benefit of the younger members of the medical profession. This organization was to be free from politics or faction embarrassment. At the second meeting the clubs' name was changed to the Kansas City Academy of Medicine. The Academy started a library and a museum. In 1903 the libraries of the Academy and Jackson County Society were joined and the Kansas City Medical Library Association was formed with directors from both societies.
This collection contains the history and minutes of the Academy. Photographs, a calendar and a program are also included in the collection. 1890-1924.
