Ralph E. Kiene Jr. was a lifelong Kansas City area resident. He was a Navy veteran of World War II and after the war received a bachelor's degree in architectural engineering from the University of Kansas in 1949 and was a member of Phi Delta Theta, Sigma Tau and Scarab. He worked with architect Samuel W. Bihr from 1949 to 1951 and with Neville, Sharp and Simon Architects from 1951 to 1953. He was a partner in the Linscott, Kiene and Haylett architecture firm from 1953 to 1964 and the executive vice president and general manager of the R.L. Sweet Lumber Co. from 1963 to 1971. Kiene had been president of Ralph E. Kiene and Associates Architects since 1971 and president of Solar Electric Systems of Kansas City since 1979.

Mr. Kiene was past vice president of the Kansas City Museum board of directors and past president of the Easter Seals Society of Kansas City and the Johnson County YMCA. He served on the Home Savings and Loan Association board of directors from 1965 to 1991. He was a member of the Mission Hills Country Club, the Mercury Club and the Vanguard Club, and a former member of the University Club. He was a member of the Old Mission Masonic Lodge. Kiene served on the Kansas Lewis and Clark Commission from 1970 to 1975 and on the Kansas Historical Sites Board of Review from 1978 to 1980.

Ralph E. Kiene Jr. was married to Isabel Alexander Kiene. He died Oct. 27, 1992 at the age of 65 years.

The collection contains architectural drawings for the varies projects for which Ralph Kiene prepared proposals and final drawings. ca. 1955 - ca. 1990.
