Girard Thompson Bryant (1905-1993) Papers (KC0036)

Girard T. Bryant was born in St. Louis, Missouri. After attending Sumner High School in St. Louis and the University of Chicago, Bryant commenced his work in education at the Western Baptist College. He later took an M.A. at the University of Kansas and an Ed. D. at Washington University. Dr. Bryant served the Kansas City community as a teacher and administrator, capping his career by serving as President of the Penn Valley Community College from 1970 to 1971. Dr. Bryant was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship in 1954 under which he taught in the College of Education at Prasarnmitr, Bangkok, Thailand. Dr. Bryant served on numerous board and government committees. He was a member of the People to People Board, the Board of Police Commissioners, the Jackson County Charter Commission, as well as the boards of the Metropolitan Community College and the Urban League.

These papers consist of two scrapbooks which include a series of book reviews and letters to the editor which Bryant wrote and published in Kansas City news papers, primarily the Kansas City Star and the Kansas City Call. Also included are materials related to Dr. Bryant's year in Thailand and to his travels in Europe at that time. Newspaper clippings and correspondence reflecting Bryant's years of community service in Kansas City are included to a limited degree. 1954-1980.
