Alfred Fenton and Brother Records (KC0062)

Born in Mason County, Kentucky in 1829, Alfred Fenton lived with his family on a farm in Ohio until 1850, when he migrated to Missouri. Three years latter he settled in Rushville, Buchanan County, Missouri. He and his brother, E.M., operated a store there and also dealt in hemp, livestock, and hauling and freighting. Fenton spent 1859 to 1862 in the wholesale grocery and stock business in Colorado. He then freighted for the government until 1867. The Rushville store was run by E.M. Fenton and a Mr. Purcell during Alfred Fenton's absence.

This collection consists of an incomplete set of volumes dealing with the hemp industry in Buchanan County, and the financial registers and daybooks of the store in Rushville. Parts of the volumes were used as scrapbooks by children of the family including paper dolls, writing exercises, paintings and drawings, and other memorabilia. 1849-1884.
