Hazel Call Page (1897-1991) Papers (KC0097)

Mrs. Hazel Page, a native of Sullivan County, Missouri, graduated from the Northeast Missouri State Teachers' College in Kirksville with a B.S. in Education. She did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Denver where she earned a degree in Library Science in 1933.

Mrs. Page taught English and Journalism in rural schools in Missouri, Illinois, and Nevada. She also worked in public and school libraries in Missouri and Colorado before becoming the Missouri State Library Supervisor of the Works Projects Administration (WPA) Statewide Library Project sponsored by the Missouri Library Commission from 1938-1943. In that role Mrs. Page helped establish libraries in rural counties throughout Missouri. Following this, Mrs. Page was a member of the national staff of the American Red Cross, serving as General Field Representative in the Midwestern area and as an Assistant Field Director at several military installations. She worked on several disaster assignments in the Midwest during her 20 years with the Red Cross. During her active years, she held membership in pertinent professional organizations and contributed articles to library journals and education magazines. In 1981, she wrote and published a book, Early Library Development in Missouri, 1938-1943, which deals primarily with her work as supervisor of the WPA Statewide Library Project.

This collection consists of two types of records: those originating with the administration of the Works Projects Administration Statewide Library Project in Missouri, and those related to the development of Mrs. Page's book on that subject. 1938-1981.
