Kansas City Live Stock Exchange Records (KC158)

The major impetus to the livestock trade in the Kansas City area occurred in the late 1860s with the coming of the railroad to Kansas City and a growing demand for meat in the East. Kansas City's stock yards, established in 1870, was a principal handling station for the cattle from Texas and the Southwest driven to meet the rail lines. The Stock Yards Company was founded in 1871 to oversee the activities of the Yards, but it was not until 1886, that the Live Stock Exchange was established to regulate the trade of the livestock dealers and to protect the interests of the producers and shippers.

The records consist of the official minutes of the Exchange including the membership meetings, the meetings of the Board of Directors and various committees and special groups; an incomplete set of the published constitution, bylaws, rules and regulations of the Exchange; and, a series of Annual Live Stock Reports of activity at the Kansas City Stock Yards. 1886-1958
