Mount Gilead School Records (KC0164)
The Mount Gilead School, just west of Kearney, Clay County, Missouri, opened in 1835. The first school was a log structure which, in 1844, was rebuilt by adding a covering of weatherboard. It was reportedly the only school in Clay County to remain open during the Civil War. The Mount Gilead School served its area citizens from its founding until it consolidated into the Kearney School District in 1946. The School, along with the adjacent Mount Gilead Church, passed to Clay County in 1983 with the understanding that it would be preserved and restored as part of the County Park system.
This collection consists of photocopies of a single ledger of minutes, tax levies and tax receipts for the Mount Gilead School District in Clay County, Missouri. Appended to the School District records is an "Inventory of Sale of Personal Property of T.M. Gosney, Deceased." 1854-1860.
