Scarritt/Canfield Family Papers (KC0204)
Nathan Scarritt was born in Edwardsville, Illinois, in 1821. He attended McKendree College, Lebanon, Illinois, and graduated in 1842. In April, 1845, he moved to Fayette, Missouri, and after remaining for three and one-half years, came to the Shawnee Indian Mission in Kansas where he served as an instructor in the higher department of the Mission school. He served in that capacity until 1851 when he retired from teaching so he could preach to the various Indian missions in the area. In late 1852, he was placed in charge of the Methodist church in Westport and Kansas City. Scarritt remained in Kansas City, serving as a missionary to the Indian tribes of Kansas, an educator, a farmer, and a civic leader for Kansas City.
Henry Canfield of Ohio served in the Civil War and married Delia Mansfield.
This collection includes typescript copies of Reverend Nathan Scarritt's (1821-1890) diary from 1850 and autobiography (undated but later than 1875). Also included are civil war letters from Henry Canfield to his wife Delia Mansfield Canfield, as well as a series of compositions which appear to be submissions to the Evening Star, a newspaper or other publication. 1850-ca. 1875.
