Cruise Palmer (1917- ) Collection (KC240)
Cruise Palmer was a prominent newspaper journalist who worked at the Kansas City Star from the 1940's to the 1960's. He was an active member of the professional journalistic society, Sigma Delta Chi and in the mid 1960's, was president of the Kansas City chapter of that organization. The Kansas City Star, established by William Rockhill Nelson in September of 1880, was Kansas City's first evening newspaper. The "chatty" style of the newspaper was initially criticized as being "gossipy". Yet, the paper was well liked by the readers and soon became the best selling newspaper in the city. In 1901, the Star acquired the Kansas City Times and started publishing both a morning and an afternoon paper. In 1922, they established the WDAF radio station, and in 1949, WDAF added Kansas City's first television station.
