Charles E. Hoffhaus (1927- ) Papers (KC256)

After graduating from Salina High School, Hoffhaus attended the University of Kansas, where he received a degree in political science. He continued his studies at Yale Law School and came to Kansas City to practice. During World War II Hoffhaus served as a Navy Petty Officer, 3rd Class for a year. Hoffhaus is an attorney with the firm of Hillix, Brewers, Hoffhaus, Whittaker, and Horner. He is also the author of several articles on legal and French colonial history which have appeared in various journals and the Kansas City Star. He has also written a book about French colonial history in the Kansas City area, Chez les Canses (Lowell Press, 1985). His continuing goal is to highlight contributions that the French made in local history. To this end he was a member of the Lewis and Clark Trail Committee in Kansas, which awarded him its Jefferson Peace Medal in 1970. In addition, Hoffhaus is a founding member of the Chouteau Society, a group dedicated to marking sites of French history in the Kansas City area.

The papers consist of chapter drafts of his book, research materials, maps, brochures and guides, correspondence, photos, clippings, and other articles. 1962-1985
