George Van Millett (1864-1953) Papers (KC0413)
George Van Horn Millett, simply known as Van, was born April 4, 1864 in Kansas City to Mr. and Mrs. Henry S. Millett. He spent his childhood in the family’s house on Wyandotte between fifth and sixth streets. Van spent his youth in Kansas City. Upon the urgings of his father who owned a printing establishment, Van moved to St. Louis to take a job at the Republic, a morning newspaper. He continued to draw and later moved to Cincinnati where he attended a fine arts school for six months. After returning home at age 22, Van, with his father’s consent, then moved on to Munich, Germany where he studied at the Royal Academy of Art for four years. He then spent two more years in Holland and France before returning home again.
In 1896, Millett helped organize and became the first President of the Paint club, which later became the Kansas City Art Institute. In 1899 He married Miss Mary Mimms McKee. They had four children: G.V. Millett, Jr., Elizabeth Millett (Robinson), Mary Catherine Millett, and John McKecknie Millett.
According to Millett’s own count he painted 173 portraits, many of which were important Kansas City citizens. He also painted many landscapes and still-life’s. Millett was a member of Native Sons. He was also a Mason and a democrat. He died January 15, 1953 at the age of 88.
This collection contains very little personal information. It does contain some personal notes, correspondence and a small sketchbook. It also contains several photographs of family and friends. The majority of the collection consists of books on artists and art and art exhibit programs and catalogs. Several books and magazines on Kansas City history are also included. The collection also contains yearbooks, newsletters, instruction books, and programs related to various aspects of the military. 1865-1956.
