Light the Candles, It’s Our Birthday

For 75 years, the University and Kansas City have been partners and neighbors, a relationship that has enhanced the growth of both.

In 1929, civic leaders recognized that Kansas City needed a university, and the University of Kansas City was chartered. The 264 students who began classes on Oct. 2, 1933, reflected the city's confidence in its future despite the economic depression that gripped the country. The year 2008 marks UMKC's 75th anniversary.

The past 75 years brought a number of changes—the University became part of the University of Missouri system, evolved into a comprehensive university of 12 schools with 14,500 students, and continues to be responsive to the needs of the city and region.

In January, the University began a yearlong recognition of its 75th anniversary, beginning with a kickoff event Jan. 25 that featured author Calvin Trillin and honorary
co-chairs of UMKC's 75th anniversary, Jeannette Nichols and Alvin Brooks (B.A. '59, M.A. '73). The event was co-sponsored by the Carolyn Benton Cockefair Chair in Continuing Education.

More events are planned throughout the year to celebrate the University's 75-year impact on the city. Watch e-Roos, Perspectives magazine and the UMKC Web site as the 75th anniversary celebration tells remarkable stories of the growth of the University, the success of its alumni and the role the University has played in Kansas City's evolution.
