The Community Counseling Services (CCAS) Assessment Clinic
is a recent addition to the CCS family, and provides evaluations for a wide
range of psychological and neuropsychological difficulties. Specifically,
comprehensive testing services are available for children and adolescents in
need of psychological, educational, and/or neuropsychological assessment.
Potential clients for these types of assessments may be having problems
getting along with peers, managing mood swings, getting low grades in
school, or experiencing conflict at home. In these cases, assessment is
necessary to determine whether learning, attention deficit, emotional or
behavioral disorders are present.
Additionally, neuropsychological testing can help assess deficits associated
with a history of head injuries, developmental disorders, exposure to toxic
substances, seizures, neglect, malnutrition, birth or prenatal difficulties,
and other risk factors. Neuropsychological testing is available for not only
children and adolescents, but adults as well. The CCAS Assessment Clinic
reports results in a caring, thorough, and confidential manner. Specific
recommendations are made for intervention to the family, school, and other
involved healthcare providers.
The CCAS Assessment Center provides services to children and youth in the
Kansas City area that do not have other access to health insurance or other
healthcare resources. The sliding scale fee structure is among the lowest in
the area, and all assessments include written recommendations for
intervention in the school, at home, and with other involved mental health
agencies. Revenue from the CCAS Assessment Center will be used to extend more
financial resources to the Division and School of Education.

Assessment of Children and Adolescents
Common disorders assessed:
Learning Disorders (e.g. reading, writing, math)
ADHD
Mood, behavior, or anger issues
Assessments are often conducted to aid in schools and
therapists deliver appropriate interventions for children and youth that are
specific to the disorders or issues found in the assessment. Testing can
help identify relatively common difficulties such as depression, anxiety, or
anger issues that may otherwise go undiagnosed and untreated. Children do
not tend to grow out of these problems, and symptoms can become more
severe as the child grows older. A psychological or educational assessment
can identify the areas in which children and youth need extra help to
overcome these problems.

Neuropsychological Testing for Children, Adolescents and
Adults
Common risk factors:
History of seizures
Neurotoxic exposure (e.g. lead)
Head injuries (e.g. car accidents, abuse)
Prenatal, postnatal (during birth or just after), or developmental
difficulties
High fevers at a young age
Chronic ear infections at a young age
Malnutrition in early years
Individuals with neuropsychological difficulties can be
undiagnosed as well. Relatively common impairments can be found in areas
such as attention, behavior, language, decision-making and planning, memory,
and spatial/motor coordination. In these cases, a full neuropsychological
assessment is needed to determine how even minor deficits could be impacting
school, work, family and other relationships, and positive goals for the
future.
