→  Email Exchange Clients
Microsoft Outlook Users

The UMKC VPN Client is no longer required for email access if you follow these directions.  You will only need the UMKC VPN Client if you need to access network file shares or Remote Desktop.

For users of Outlook 2003 your configuration information will only vary based on whether you are setting up Outlook in an office on campus, or on a home computer.  Before proceeding, make sure you know your Exchange username.

The preferred and supported client is Outlook 2003. (Not to be confused with Outlook Express.)  This is installed on most campus computers, and is available for home use from Information Services on the RooConnect CD.

General POP or IMAP Quick Information
Preferred Fully Supported Clients
Unsupported Clients

'Supported' generally means that these programs have been tested and work properly, and the UMKC Call Center can assist with all questions related to the product.  'Unsupported' generally means the product works, and we have some basic instructions for the setup, but actual performance will vary, and we are not able to provide any additional configuration assistance.

For Outlook, POP3/IMAP4 is not considered 'supported' as these modes lack proper support for 'Global Address List', full Calendaring and Scheduling capabilities, and rules management.  There are other capabilities which will not be listed here at this time.

The 'Global Address List' allows you to lookup the email address for any UMKC Faculty, Staff, or published Student, all from within Outlook.

The Calendaring capabilities allows you to properly schedule meeting requests, with the ability to see which members of your meeting have free times during the time you are attempting to schedule your meeting.

The rules management allows you to create email sorting rules that can actually run on the Exchange server, even when your email program is turned off.  This can be helpful should you also access your email using the Web Interface and want to find your email already sorted.
