Outlook Express settings
Please note Outlook Express is NOT Outlook 2003. If you are interested
in using Outlook 2003, please go back to the top of the FAQ.
Please make sure that you visit http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/
to ensure that you have the latest patches for Outlook Express before
continuing. Out of date versions will place you at a greater risk for
virus or other email attacks.
If you only need to update your SMTP settings, please skip to
step 9.
New Outlook Express users
- Start Outlook Express. This should be under Start ,
then All Programs. The icon to startup should look like this:

- Outlook Express may prompt you to make it the default email client.
If you are only going to use Outlook Express for email, select yes.
Otherwise choose no, and un-check the 'Always perform this check when
starting Outlook Express' box.
- You should be prompted to enter your name. (If this window does not appear as
pictured skip to the Existing
Outlook Express users section.) Enter your name as prompted, and
click next. This should look like this:

- Next you will be prompted to enter your e-mail address.
Enter your e-mail address, and click next. This should look like this:

- For your e-mail server settings, select 'IMAP' for the server type. Set
your incoming server to: imap4.exchange.umkc.edu and your
outgoing server to: smtp.exchange.umkc.edu . Then click
next. This should look like this:

- Enter your Exchange username as the account
name, and optionally you can enter your password. (Don't enter your
password if you are concerned about the people who have physical access to
your home computer.) Then click next. This should look like
this:

- Click Finish to save your settings.
- You will be prompted to download a list of folders.
Select Yes. This will look like this:

- You will next need to update your SMTP settings.
Click on the Tools menu, and select Accounts. This will look like
this:

- Select to edit the account properties by clicking on
'Properties'. This should look like this:

- Select the 'Servers' tab. Check the box under
'Outgoing Mail Server' titled 'My server requires authentication'.
This should look like this:

- Select the 'Advanced' tab.
- Optionally, if you wish to better protect your email
connection with UMKC, check the IMAP SSL check box for 'This server requires a
secure connection (SSL). (Don't select the SSL check box for SMTP, as
Outlook has a bug which prevents SSL on port 587.)
- Set the SMTP server port number to 587, and set the IMAP
port to 143 without SSL or 993 with SSL protection. This should look like this:

- Click OK, then click Close to save your changes.
Existing Outlook Express users
If you would like to simply add your UMKC Exchange account to your other
accounts which you get with Outlook Express follow this instruction set.
(This also applies if you have no other email accounts on Outlook Express, and
the email wizard fails to start automatically.)
- Open Outlook Express
- Go to the Tools menu, and select Accounts.
- Click on the Add button, and select Mail.
- Follow the steps above for new users starting with step 3.
