Budget categories & associated UMKC guidelines
When developing your budget, a number of factors must be considered. Not only are you determining your needs required to complete your project and how much those needs will cost, you are calculating those needs in the framework of federal, state, university and agency-specific guidelines and regulations.
Although the information included here highlights some of the general guidelines for budget development, each proposal is different. Some agencies or specific funding announcements will restrict budget categories, have special conditions (for example, cost sharing), or cost request caps. It is vital you read the funding announcement as well as the funding agency's project/grant preparation guide before constructing your budget.
At UMKC, most project budgets are developed in collaboration with departmental or divisional fiscal officers. Additionally, ORS is available to provide assistance with budget development or review.
