Maschil Manring (1825-1905) Papers (KC0291)


Maschil Manring was born on September 5, 1825 in Gallia City, Ohio.  On April 11, 1850, Manring married Ann Love (April 17, 1831-November 18, 1916) in Gallia City.  In Plattsburgh, Missouri (Clinton County) on February 1853 he bought 70 acres of land in Davis (Daviess) County.  In 1865 he and his family moved to Gentry County, Missouri.  He was appointed a director of School District #3 in Township 16 of Gentry County, Missouri, on October 27, 1866; in April 1871, he was appointed chairman, and in April 1874 he was elected president of the school board.  Manring appeared to operate a livery business, perhaps with his brother, William who was born April 17, 1833.  From 1862 through at least 1863, Maschil was a commissioned officer for Union forces stationed in Helena, Arkansas.

Manring and his wife had nine children: Lawren (March 13, 1851-June 18, 1851); Margret Ellenor (October 4, 1853-September 6, 1858); Flavies (March 13, 1856-April 28, 1857); Oakley (June 3, 1858-October 17, 1949); Edward Denver (January 22, 1860-March 6, 1906); Maschil (October 1861-April 22, 1950); William Sherman (March 14, 1866-March 28, 1947); John Franklin (June 16, 1867-January 26, 1898); Eva (June 2, 1869-August 15, 1870).  Maschil Manring died in Gentry County February 22, 1905.

The three bound volumes were used for multiple purposes including a diary, a record book for the School District, and an account book/ledger for his livery business. 1858-1880.
