To develop a professional workforce
Our professional programs embrace the mission of urban service. Our School of Law [SOL],
for example, which has proudly adopted the identifying motto, “the urban public law school
with the small liberal arts feel,” embraces its urban mission by providing the community with
pro bono legal services through its family law, tax, and entrepreneurial legal clinics.

more information see Criterion 5.)

The L.P. Cookingham Institute of Urban Affairs, part of the Henry W. Bloch School of
Business and Public Administration, educates students to participate effectively as public
administrators within the urban environment. Coursework, research, faculty recruitment,
and community collaborations are all influenced by an urban perspective.

Our Architecture, Urban Planning and Design [AUPD] Department within the College of
Arts and Sciences directly engages with the urban Kansas City community to improve the
safety, health and aesthetic experience of urban neighborhoods. Most recently, AUPD led a
design team to provide essential planning assistance for Kansas City’s Washington Wheatley
neighborhood. AUPD’s expertise also extends to other urban areas far beyond Kansas
City. “New Orleans: Planning for Heritage Tourism,” an AUPD design recovery project in
response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005, received national recognition.
