Previous Report Page Support of the research mission
UMKC researchers embrace our research mission by expanding the boundaries of knowledge in ways that directly enhance the community’s ability to improve urban life. Among the many research projects at UMKC, our faculty are conducting important studies into the causes, prevention and treatment of the rising obesity rates in urban Kansas City. Another example is an ongoing study by researchers from SOM’s Department of Psychiatry that addresses recidivism rates of people who attempt suicide and that tracks the success of suicide intervention strategies in reducing suicide rates and the use of emergency rooms in treating suicide victims. Our self study chapter on Criterion 4 will further document UMKC’s support of its research mission.

As the largest and most comprehensive urban research university in the five-county, bi-state metropolitan area, UMKC serves as an indispensable resource and partner to the Kansas City community and beyond. UMKC’s engagement with its various constituencies begins with the interaction between students and faculty in our classrooms and laboratories. The efforts of UMKC’s administrative and support staff enrich the quality of this interaction. Also enriching our academic and research pursuits are our ongoing relationships with external constituents, including other institutions and organizations, community members, trustees and alumni.
