Department of Environmental Health and Safety
The
Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS)
is a centralized service for monitoring the
acquisition, storage, use, and proper disposal of
hazardous materials used in teaching, research, and
industrial services at UMKC. Safety training is
provided through the specific division of EHS with
records kept for compliance purposes. For
specific regulatory requirements designated by
granting institutions EHS relies on the Radiation
Safety Committee and the Biosafety Committee to
establish appropriate safety policies and programs
in accordance with regulatory guidelines while
evaluating the research being conducted at UMKC.
The Occupational Safety &
Health program has been designed and implemented by
EHS to provide University employees and constituents
with a safe work environment. This program is
in accordance with the UM system Business Policy.
In the event of a federal or
state regulatory enforcement investigation, EHS will
coordinate the University's response by accompanying
the investigator while on the campus and providing
liaison support to the University faculty and staff
throughout the entire process. The Director of EHS
will attend the formal closeout session documenting
all findings to ensure compliance is maintained.
In order to continually certify
that UMKC is in compliance with appropriate safety
regulations and our environmental management system,
it is necessary for the Director of EHS to
periodically perform compliance assessments of
university safety programs. From these
assessments an Annual Environmental Compliance
Report will be provided to the Chancellor detailing
the status of compliance, recommended program
modifications, and significant regulatory changes.
