Department of Environmental Health and Safety

The Hazardous Materials Division of EHS responds to issues involving the use, storage and disposal of hazardous substances on the UMKC campus. By incorporating the use of both a bar-coding system to inventory and track these materials and a reactive compatibility grouping system as a reliable safety measure, the staff oversees over 400 laboratories. Under the endorsement of the Hazardous Materials Management Committee this division of EHS has recorded over 5000 hazardous materials audits in the last 10 years. The Hazardous Materials Division also provides respirator fit-testing to the university departments requiring this service as well as the Emergency Response efforts for chemical spills of hazardous materials. The Division is coordinated by Mr. Tony Brown, Senior Environmental Chemist.

The Chemical Management Plan is the university handbook of laboratory safety and available on the EHS webpage. It was developed in cooperation with the Region 7 EPA and contains the approved treatment protocols for laboratory neutralization of accepted hazardous materials.
