Are UMKC Officers REAL police?
Yes, we are. UMKC officers attend either the Kansas City Police Department's Regional Academy or the Western Missouri Regional Police Academy. Both of these academies provide nearly 1000 hours of police training which more than meets the minimum 600 hours required in Jackson county where UMKC is located. We are fully certified, sworn law enforcement officers. All officers go through many hours of in-service training each year.
What is the jurisdiction of the campus police?
The jurisdiction of the UMKC Police is primarily the university campus and the adjacent neighborhood.
Can a UMKC officer write me a ticket or arrest me?
Yes, they can. Being state certified officers, we can write tickets and have the powers of arrest according to the Missouri Statutes. UMKC Officers also enforce city ordinances and write Kansas City tickets for traffic violations on surrounding city streets.
What number should you call if there were an emergency on campus?
To be connected with the UMKC Police, dial 9-1-1 or 1515 on any campus phone.
Are the emergency phones on campus direct dial to the UMKC Police?
Yes, they are. Well-marked emergency or "blue light" phones are located throughout the campus grounds and parking lots which will connect directly with the UMKC Police dispatcher without dialing.
What is the number one crime on campus?
By far the most common crime that occurs on campus is simple theft. You can avoid being a statistic in this category by simple common sense. Do NOT leave your possessions unattended at any time. Do NOT leave anything of value visible in your car. Lock your office door/desk any time you leave no matter how short the absence will be.
Is there an escort service on campus?
Yes, there is. Personal escort services are provided Monday thru Thursday from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. by the UMKC 'Safewalk' program. If you require an escort at other times, contact the UMKC Police at 235-1515.
Where is the UMKC Police Department located and when is it open?
The Department is located in Room 213 of the old Student Services Building at 4825 Troost. The Police Department is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. We never close.
Is the Police Department hiring new officers?
UMKC Police actively recruits people to become part of our department. Applications may be filled out at Human Resources at the Administration Center.
Does the Police Department fingerprint for applications, licenses, and other personal reasons?
Yes we do. Fingerprinting is available for students, faculty and staff by appointment only Monday through Friday from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Just call (816) 235-1515 to set up an appointment. We charge $5 per fingerprint card.
