UMKC Application Process : Special Admission

Trial Admissions :

High school graduates who do not meet the standards for regular admission from high school may, in some cases, be admitted to the University on a conditional trial basis. The student must earn a 2.0 grade-point average to be eligible to enroll the following semester.

General Undergraduate Admissions Policies and Procedures Students who do not meet the core requirements for admission, in some cases, may also be admitted conditionally once they provide evidence of enrollment in the coursework needed. Students can choose from several options during their senior year in high school or thr summer before their freshman year to gain regular admission.

UMKC encourages students to choose one of the following options to fulfill the core requirements:

  1. Take coursework in the required area at UMKC during the summer prior to the fall semester of their freshman year.
  2. Enroll in college-level coursework in the required area at an accredited community college or four-year institution.
  3. Complete the required coursework through correspondence or independent study.

GED High School Equivalency :

Students can apply for admission based on the General Educational Development tests after their high school class has graduated. The GED scores must be passing in each area. These students must also submit ACT enhanced composite scores of at least 24. Students not meeting these criteria may be considered for Trial Admission (see above).

Early Admission From High School :

Superior high school students may be admitted before they graduate from high school if:

  1. They have completed all the requirements for graduation from high school but will not receive a diploma until their class graduates. Eligibility for admission is determined by the procedures established for regular admission from high school.
    A high school counselor or principal must certify that all graduation requirements have been met.
  2. They have not completed all requirements for graduation from high school but have submitted a test score and a high school class rank. The combination of test score and class rank will be evaluated on the basis of a standard that is higher than that used for regular admission from high school.

In either case, students are admitted on an individual basis, and an interview may be required.

The following information is also required:

Application for admission, high school transcript, letter of recommendationfrom a high school principal or counselor, and written parental approval.

Home Schooled Students :

Graduates of home school programs are required to complete the 17-unit core college-preparatory curriculum. They must have a minimum ACT composite score of 24 or achieve a 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale in the core curriculum to be admissible to UMKC. Students not meeting these criteria may be considered for Trial Admission (see above).

Additional Factors Considered for Admission :

The University seeks a heterogeneous student body reflecting diversity of race, ethnicity, age, geography (including international students) and physical ability. Factors given prime consideration for admission to undergraduate study are applicants previous academic success and the quality of records presented. Applicants who do not meet criteria set forth above may be considered by applying to the Director of Admissions.

1. Extensive co-curricular activities involving school, community or church;
2. Outstanding talent or abilities;

4. Evidence of marked improvement over time in high school academic record;
