Applying as a Visiting & Community/High School Dual Credit Student at UMKC

Visiting/Community Students are :

Degree-seeking students at another institution, wishing to take courses at UMKC and transfer them back to their home institution, or Members of the community, interested in taking a class or classes at UMKC.

Note: Students are not eligible to be visiting/community students if they have previously been academically dismissed from UMKC.

Visiting Students DO NOT:

  1. Have to provide transcripts of their current or previous college or high school coursework
  2. Have to pay an application fee.

Visiting/Community Student Limitations :

  1. Visiting/Community students are not eligible for financial aid.
  2. Visiting/Community students are not eligible for academic advising and are limited to 12 credit hours per semester and 6 hours during the Summer.
  3. Admission as Visiting/Community student is not the same as admission to a degree program. If you wish to transfer as a regular degree-seeking student, you must submit a regular application for admission and all official transcripts.
  4. Admission as a Visiting/Community student does not imply that space in specific courses is available. You may only register for classes during Open Registration (see registration guide). Some classes are not open to visiting/community students.
  5. Admission as a Visiting/Community student is for only one term. If you wish to attend a second/consecutive term, you will need to complete either a regular application for admission or readmission or, in some instances, a Visiting/Community student application.
  6. Admission as a Visiting/Community student to UMKC does not guarantee that your classes will transfer back and count as degree credit at your home institution. Check with your home institution first by give them the name(s) and course number(s) of the course(s) you wish to take at UMKC.
  7. As a Visiting/Community student you will acquire a grade for your class and a University of Missouri-Kansas City GPA. That GPA is an official record of your work in the University of Missouri System and will be used to determine your admissability should you seek regular admission to UMKC or another University of Missouri school.
  8. Hours accumulated as a Visiting/Community student may or may not count towards a degree at UMKC, depending on the specific requirements of the degree program you enter.

Please Note:
Graduate Biological Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy do not admit Visiting/Community students.

Students interested in Business and Public Administration, Engineering, Law, and Nursing should consult with advisers in those academic programs to determine eligibility and procedures.

The Conservatory of Music requires auditions for students taking performance classes.

Dual High School - University Enrollment :

Superior high school students can be admitted in a special student category in order to take one or two University courses concurrently with their junior or senior year of high school.

Students must submit a special application for admission, along with a request that includes high school recommendation and written parental approval. Students are admitted based on academic standards that exceed those required for admission from high school.

Admissions are limited and are subject to the space available in, and completion of prerequisites for, the desired course or courses.
