Originally from Brazil, Dr. Mingucci has been working with language teaching and acquisition for more than 30 years. Dr. Mingucci oversees all administrative and academic functions of the ALI.

As a student, Adam studied language and culture in Brazil, Chile and Germany, receiving his BA in Spanish and a minor in German from Rockhurst University in 1997. Adam received his MA-TESOL from UMKC and has been working and teaching at the ALI at UMKC since 1998. Adam has been a guest professor/teacher-trainer at Harbin Medical University in China, Universidade de Caxias do Sul in Brazil, and Taegu Catholic University in South Korea.

Elisa has lived and worked throughout the US and in Brussels, Belgium. She has a master’s in Higher Education Administration and in Photojournalism from the University of Missouri and a bachelor’s in Slavic Language and Literatures (Russian) from the University of Kansas. Elisa handles ALI’s scholarships and is the person to contact for questions about tuition and fees and other money matters.

Before joining the ALI in 1995, Fran lived, studied and worked in 7 different countries. Fran is an ESL specialist and coordinates all of the housing, social activities and special programs for the ALI.

From a young age April has had a passion for foreign languages which lead her to pursue undergraduate degrees in International Business and Spanish. In addition, she studied French and Italian on her own, and is currently learning Arabic. She lived and worked abroad in Spain, Italy, and Chile, and has travelled to every continent except Antarctica. She completed a Master’s in International Relations at Missouri State University.

Steve has 25 years of experience in international education in Latin America, Asia and the United States, conducting teacher trainings, and teaching both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. His specialty area is Cross-Cultural and Diversity Studies, included as well in interdisciplinary Discourse. In addition, he has taught ESOL, Spanish, and French. Of his publications, he is an award winning translator. His Ph.D. studies research focus is Intercultural Transitions between Latin America and the United States.

Michael Turner graduated from Truman State University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science in English and from the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon with a Master’s degree in Linguistics in 1999. Michael’s interests include interlanguage phonology and computer assisted language learning.

Clint has lived and worked abroad in China and Taiwan for two years, and directed Intrax International Institute for six years before joining the ALI.

Kate holds a Master’s degree in TESOL from Canterbury Christ Church University in Canterbury, Kent, England and an ICELT Certificate (In-Service Certificate in English Language Teaching) from the British Council. She has been teaching at the ALI for many years and has taught basic to advanced students. Prior to teaching at the ALI, Kate taught at the Language School of the University of Guanajuato in Mexico. While there she taught in a variety of university settings, including to English language students and as a teacher trainer in the BA TESOL program. She is also fluent in Spanish and has traveled to several Spanish speaking countries.

Janine has her B.A in Human Resources from the University of Kansas and a Masters in Business Administration from Rockhurst University in Missouri. She completed her Masters in TESOL at UMKC in 2012. Janine has been with UMKCs ALI for four years. She taught in South Korea for one year and has taught in Brazil through the State Departments Partners in Americas program. Prior to working at UMKC, Janine worked for Fortune 100 companies such as AT&T, Verizon, and Lucent Technologies, where she was responsible for developing technology solutions for businesses and managing multi-discipline teams.

Talyn has worked with the refugee and immigrant populations in both the US and Kenya for over 20 years teaching ESL and providing immigration and social services. She is co-founder and served as co-Executive Director of Heshima Kenya based in Nairobi, Kenya until 2012. She holds a Master’s in Education with a focus on TESOL from the University of Kansas in Lawrence.

Chelsey Butts graduated from the University of Kansas in 2014 with a Master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction with an emphasis in TESOL and a minor in Linguistics. Before joining the ALI, she taught English as a second language at the University of Kansas’ Applied English Center.

After returning to the USA, he completed a Master’s in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and has been teaching at the Applied Language Institute for 3 years. A native of Kansas City, Missouri, Nicoya has also lived and studied abroad in the Philippines and Costa Rica. She holds a Master’s of Education in Curriculum and Instruction-TESOL from the University of Kansas and is an active member of the TESOL International and MIDTESOL professional organizations. Prior to earning her Master’s degree, she was a computer systems engineer.

Michael has previously taught English languages classes at the University of Mexico in Chicago. He holds a Masters of Arts in English Composition and Rhetoric from Arizona State University as well as a Bachelor of Arts from Sarah Lawrence College. Michael’s teaching credentials began with a CELTA certification from Cambridge University in 2008.

Shelby Estelle began teaching English during her time abroad in Spain. While teaching English in both private and public schools, her desire to become a more knowledgeable teacher to English language learners became apparent. Upon returning to the US, she pursued a master’s degree in TESL from the University of Central Missouri, graduating in 2015. Her experiences in learning a second language have also given her a great passion to teach those who aspire to learn English.

Debbie received her BS in Education of French and Language Arts, which included studying at l'Universite de Bordeaux in France. she has a Master's in French and a Master's in Teaching English as a Second Language as well as a Ph.D in Curriculum and Instruction, emphasis on Teaching English as a Second Language. She has over 20 years experience teaching ESL at the college level.

Emily has a Master’s in TESOL from the University of Southern California. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Communication & Culture Studies with a focus on Human Interactions in a Global Context. Before moving to Kansas City, Emily taught ESL in Ohio and Colorado, working with students from all over the world.

Juanita returned to the ALI after working abroad in the United Arab Emirates and with the English Language Fellowship in the Philippines. The Fellowship allowed Juanita to participate in U.S. Embassy designed English Language programs; facilitating teacher-trainer workshops through her host institution and the U.S. Embassy, and teaching English for Specific Purposes, in addition to degree courses in English Language Arts. Juanita has taught English for over ten years. She volunteers with several NGOs as a first responder to natural and manmade disasters, having gone to Indonesia in 2005, and Ethiopia in 2013.

Jessica holds a doctoral degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Kansas (KU). Her research focuses on validity evidence in the assessment of English learners. Prior to teaching at UMKC, Jessica worked at the KU Center for Educational Testing and Evaluation for four years as an assessment developer and teacher trainer. She has also taught ESL in China and holds a CELTA qualification from the U.K.

Jasmine currently attends UMKC studying Sociology with a Cultural Anthropology emphasis. She plans on working with refugees in her career. When not at work, she spends most of her time as an active member of UMKC’s Dance Team, which is ranked 2nd in the nation. In 2014, she received the National 'I Dare You' Leadership award. Overall, Jasmine has a passion for working with international people and helping the students here at the ALI.

Cody is an international student from Vietnam. He has been in United States, specifically Kansas City, for over 3 years now. He is majoring in Chemistry at the University of Missouri-Kansas City and hopefully will be continuing his education as a professional student in Pharmacy. He is the co-founder and Vice President of the Vietnamese Student Association on campus, which promotes cultural diversity, cultural awareness as well as enhancement of harmony and welfare in multicultural communities.

Phung is a senior student of the Henry Bloch School and Honor College. She is expecting to receive a bachelor degree of business administration with emphases in Entrepreneurship and Marketing. As a coordinator, she helps successfully organize Friend of Internationals organization at UMKC hoping to ease the difficulties for the international students.
