ASM Staff

Position title: Work-Study Office Assistant

The work-study office assistant works alongside members of the ASM staff, assisting office personal with office management tasks.

Coaching Program

The UMKC Coaching Program is designed specifically for first-time students to the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The program’s purpose is to equip students with the tools necessary to succeed academically. Students enrolled in the Coaching Program meet with various staff members throughout the academic year on a regularly scheduled basis.  

 

Position title: Peer Coach

Now Accepting Applications for Peer Coaches for 2013.

Peer Coach Responsibilities:

  • Attend initial and ongoing bi-weekly trainings
  • Provide students one-on-one support and guidance in individual weekly meetings
  • Help students set and achieve short-term educational and life goals
  • Provide hands-on support to assigned students:
    • Planning daily schedules with students
    • Encouraging student engagement on campus
    • Assisting students in locating campus offices or resources
    • Attending occasional lectures with students to gain insight about how the student might better prepare for that class
    • Guide them through library resources
    • Attend campus cultural events with students
  • Turn in weekly logs on student communication
  • Model good student behavior

Jumpstart Program

Jumpstart Kansas City is a local affiliate site of Jumpstart for Young Children, Inc. This campus-based AmeriCorps program recruits, trains and pairs work-study supported college students with preschool children in Head Start and other low-income early learning programs. Throughout the school year, college students help preschool children develop the skills needed to be successful in school. Jumpstart focuses on promoting school success for young children, encouraging strong family involvement and training college students to be future teachers and leaders.

 

Position available: Corps Member

Jumpstart Corps members serve 11-15 hours per week (for a minimum of 300 hours) during the school year. Responsibilities include:

  • participating in two two-hour Jumpstart sessions each week with partner child and team;
  • participating in two team planning meetings each week;
  • serving four to six hours each week in a preschool classroom during the regular school day;
  • communicating with partner child’s family;
  • participating in intensive pre- and in-service training; and
  • attending periodic service days, usually held on Saturdays.

Math and Science Resource Center

The Math and Science Resource Center (MSRC) is dedicated to providing individual attention to math and science students, while increasing retention efforts. Students may work individually or in small groups with tutors. Textbooks, solution manuals, videotapes, content-specific handouts and study guides are also available.

Position: Math Tutor

Math tutors provide one-on-one and group tutoring support to UMKC students in Intermediate Algebra, College Algebra, Mathematics for Liberal Arts, Precalculus, Trigonometry, Mathematics for Teachers: Number Systems, Mathematics for Teachers: Elementary Geometry, Brief Calculus and Matrix Algebra, Calculus I and II, and Elementary Statistics. Tutors must have successfully completed math courses up to Calculus II. Tutors’ hours can vary between 5 and 20 hours per week.

Supplemental Instruction Program

Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic support model that utilizes peer assisted study sessions. The SI program targets traditionally difficult academic courses and provides regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions. During an SI study session, students compare notes, discuss readings and develop organizational tools and predict test items. This form of academic assistance is attached directly to selected courses at the undergraduate, graduate and professional school levels.

 

Position title: SI Leader

SI Leaders facilitate group study sessions for selected UMKC courses. The leader functions as a “model student” by going to all the classes and taking notes. They help students formulate and answer their own questions, by using collaborative and group study strategies.

SI Mentors are experienced SI Leaders who observe and plan with SI leaders. Students interested in applying as an SI Mentor must have experience as an SI leader to apply.

Video-based Supplemental Instruction Program

The Video-Based Supplemental Instruction program (VSI) is a highly structured approach to learning that helps students master course content as they develop and refine reasoning and critical thinking skills. In VSI, professors of core curriculum courses record their lectures on videotape and students are enrolled in a video section of the college course. In the video sections, trained facilitators use the taped lectures as a tool and guide students through the learning cycle.
