Jumpstart

Overview

Jumpstart is a national early education organization working toward the day every child in America enters kindergarten prepared to succeed. Jumpstart delivers a research-based and cost-effective program by training college students and community volunteers to serve preschool-age children in low-income neighborhoods. Through a proven curriculum, these children develop the language and literacy skills they need to be ready for school, setting them on a path for lifelong success. Jumpstart is a proud member of the AmeriCorps national service network. Learn more at jstart.org.

During the 2013–14 school year, Jumpstart Kansas City will:

  • Serve more than 300 children at Head Start centers and other preschools serving low-income families in Kansas City
  • Recruit and train 90 college students from UMKC and Rockhurst University to mentor preschool children at risk for future school failure
  • Engage more than 70 community volunteers in service projects that support families and community members in preparing children for school success
