Award Nominations

SI Awards and Recognitions

To recognize the excellence of individuals in the field, the International Center for Supplemental Instruction will present awards at the 2012 Conference on SI. All award winners will receive recognition certificates.

General Eligibility and Application Instructions for all Award Categories

Any SI leader, SI supervisor, or other professional colleague at an institution that has an active SI program is eligible for the awards and recognition program. Anyone who has previously received an individual SI award will be excluded from receiving another individual award unless he or she is being considered to receive an SI publication award or special recognition award granted by the Center.


Each application packet should include a cover sheet with the following information: the title of the award; nominee(s); position title(s); institution; department; complete mailing address; work telephone and fax number; and email address. Email your nominations to goldk@umkc.edu. All applications must be emailed on or before December 16, 2011. Notifications will be emailed on February 3, 2012. Below are the specific criteria for each award.

 
Award Categories:

Outstanding SI Leader

This award supports SI leaders as they continue or fulfill their degree aspirations. A minimum of one award will be given.

Eligibility Criteria:
  • Served as an SI leader for at least two academic terms
Evaluation Criteria:
  • Evidence of quality contribution to student learning and development of SI learning culture
  • Understanding of SI learning theory as demonstrated by practical experiences as a leader
  • Demonstration of outstanding performance, commitment to and leadership within SI
  • Support materials (4 page limit); can include links to websites containing additional multi-media
 Application Directions:
  • Submit cover sheet
  • Submit a double-spaced biographical essay on the topic “How My Service as an SI Leader has Changed Me Personally and Academically” including evidence/examples of the first three evaluation criteria listed above (3 page limit)
  • Submit a letter of recommendation from his or her SI supervisor (optional inclusion of additional letters from faculty and/or fellow SI leaders)
  • Total pages including cover sheet not to exceed 15 pages

Outstanding SI Support by a Campus Administrator

This award recognizes the special supporting role of administrators to the success of SI programs.

Evaluation Criteria:
  • Evidence of institutional and external professional support of the local SI program
  • Evidence of successful program outcomes
Application Directions:
  • Submit cover sheet
  • Submit letter of nomination from his or her local Supervisor (2 page limit) summarizing the nominee’s qualifications for the award, including evidence/examples of the evaluation criteria listed above
  • Submit resume or vita of the nominee (10 page limit)
  • Submit supporting documentation, such as most recent newspaper articles, list of professional publications, and/or formal presentations supporting SI, etc.
  • Total pages including cover sheet not to exceed 25 pages

Outstanding SI Program

This award recognizes excellence in SI programs. Winners are invited to present their work at the SI conference.

Evaluation Criteria:
  • Evidence of successful program by recognition by students, program staff, faculty, and campus administrators
  • Evidence of successful program outcomes to include: improved student learning, increased graduation rates, and reduced attrition
  • Evidence of successful marketing of the program
Application Directions:
  • Submit cover sheet
  • Submit letter of nomination that summarizes the achievements of the SI program including description of the program as represented by: percentage and number of students served, qualitative and/or quantitative research studies on program effectiveness regarding student outcomes, and partnerships with other campus departments and/or off-campus agencies (5 page limit)
  • Submit examples of marketing materials
  • Submit letters of support from nominee’s students, program staff, faculty, and campus administrators (2 page limit each)
  • Submit supporting materials from the SI program; can include links to websites containing additional multi-media (5 page limit)
  • Total pages including cover sheet not to exceed 20 pages

Outstanding SI Research and/or Publication

This award honors significant contributions to the field of SI. This may include publications, theses or dissertations, or published and unpublished projects. The winner will be invited to present his or her work at the SI Conference.

Evaluation Criteria:
  • Significance to the field of Supplemental Instruction
  • Theoretical/research basis or relevance/suitability
  • Quality of writing and/or layout and design
Application Directions:
  • Submit cover sheet
  • Submit letter of nomination summarizing the significance to the field of SI (2 page limit)
  • Submit at least one letter of endorsement from an expert in the field (2 page limit)
  • Submit supporting material which should include an electronic copy of the article, book, monograph or publication, and/or links to websites containing additional multi-media  
  • Total pages including cover sheet not to exceed 10 pages
