Academic Support and Mentoring

Welcome from the Director

The UMKC Academic Support and Mentoring (ASM) has the opportunity to assist students in becoming academically successful. Once students gain access to an institution, it becomes that institution's responsibility, in collaboration with the students, to make sure that they meet their academic goals. In these difficult economic times it has become particularly important to increase student retention at the University. ASM’s Supplemental Instruction (SI) and Video-based Supplemental Instruction (VSI) programs address this goal by promoting and helping students achieve academic excellence, increasing re-enrollment rates, and persisting towards graduation. Although the credibility and success of the SI and VSI programs have been established a long time ago, we continually analyze these programs and adapt them as necessary in accordance with changing educational and technological demands.

Access programs at ASM are prime examples of UMKC as a campus without borders. Among the many benefits that these programs provide, Access Programs provide awareness of educational opportunities and options for students and increase the success of their participants [many from disadvantaged backgrounds] in secondary and post-secondary education.

The programs we offer through the Center range from early childhood development in the Jumpstart program, to college level students in the Advanced Preparation Program, to programs such as SI and VSI that extend beyond our campus and community borders to the national and international arenas. Each of our programs is unique, but each has the overall goal of helping students reach their academic goals. As you navigate our Web site, we hope you sense our dedication and commitment to supporting all students in releasing their full potential in scholarship and creative activity.

Kind regards,

Marion Stone
