Written English Proficiency Test
The Written English Proficiency Test (WEPT) is a written exam that all UMKC undergraduates must pass before enrolling in a writing intensive class (any class with a “WI” next to the number) or graduating.
The WEPT is offered twice a semester. Students who have taken English 225 and have at least 45 credit hours are eligible to take the exam. The three hour exam requires students to compose an argumentative essay based on a packet of articles surrounding a certain topic.
WEPT Preparation
There are a variety of services to help students prepare for the WEPT, including tutoring and workshops through the UMKC Writing Center.
After registering for the WEPT through Blackboard, students will be able to pick up the packet of articles at Roo Prints one week before the test (note: packets will not be available the day of the exam).
Additional information about the WEPT can be found in the UMKC catalog.
Handouts
Tutors use handouts during WEPT workshops that provide some of the basic information about the test:
- WEPT Information Packet (complete with a sample WEPT essay, information on MLA, and more).
