Worldly, rich, and sympathetic. Moving from observations to conversations to
assertions. A master of the nuance of history and its broad sweep through our
lives, Alice Brand is at heart a master singer of our communal tales.
-- Judith Baumel, former director, Poetry Society of America
Imagine landscapes as varied as the pace. From Australia to Hai Chen to
Dubuque. From Aboriginals to women asking for a moment's attention, Alice Brand
skips deliciously from an easy pace to a gallop. Imagine a sense of voice until
it said of her poems as it's said of the Aboriginals: "They claim sacred sites
that planes cannot fly over." -- Diane Glancy
"The Twist of the Place" speaks to us about [Brand's] experience of her Jewish
heritage, communicating a sense of estrangement and, as contest judge Roberta
Hill Whiteman has said of her poem, a "longing for connections, to understand
and be connected to the world...to a heritage that is appreciated, a sense of
community kept" that gives poignancy and power to the work of minorities and, to
some degree, all women. -- Sing Heavenly Muse!
