William F. Van Wert Provides Humorous Historical Revisions in Collection of Short Stories Published by UMKC's BkMk Press

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- BkMk Press (Book Mark Press) at the University of Missouri-Kansas City announces the publication of "The Advancement of Ignorance," a collection of satirical stories by William F. Van Wert.

Van Wert uses the life of Spanish conquistador Hernando Cortez as a theme upon which to improvise imaginary, irreverent encounters between Cortez and other historical figures, including Erasmus, Martin Luther, and Cervantes. Van Wert's playful use of puns, anachronisms, and fractured historical revelations provides the book with a humorous punch.

Van Wert is the author of 10 previous books including novels, poetry and short-story collections, a memoir, and film criticism. "Memory Links" (University of Georgia Press, 1995) won the Associated Writing Programs Award for Creative Nonfiction. His work has been included in the O. Henry Prize stories and other anthologies. Kirkus Reviews calls Van Wert "A wonderfully fresh voice."

Van Wert lives in Philadelphia, where he teaches creative writing and film studies at Temple University. For many years, Van Wert reviewed films for the National Public Radio program "Fresh Air."

BkMk Press was founded in 1971 and joined UMKC in 1983. The press, which receives support from the university, publishes poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction by contemporary authors. Financial assistance for this project was provided by the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency. Kansas City artist Bense Garza designed the book's cover. For media review copies or more information about "The Advancement of Ignorance," call (816) 235-2558*.
