Peer Coach Responsibilities & Requirements

Peer Coach Responsibilities: 

  • Attend initial and ongoing bi-weekly trainings
  • Provide students one-on-one support and guidance in individual weekly meetings
  • Help students set and achieve short-term educational and life goals
  • Provide hands-on support to assigned students:
    • Planning daily schedules with students
    • Encouraging student engagement on campus
    • Assisting students in locating campus offices or resources
    • Attending occasional lectures with students to gain insight about how the student might better prepare for that class
    • Guide them through library resources
    • Attend campus cultural events with students
  • Assist Academic Coordinators in facilitating A&S 100 sessions
  • Turn in weekly logs on student communication
  • Model good student behavior

 Requirements:

  • UMKC undergraduate or graduate student
  • Must have completed two or more semesters at UMKC
  • Enrolled full time
  • 2.75 minimum GPA
  • Excellent communication skills - both verbal and written
  • Knowledge/understanding of 1st year student issues
  • Highly responsible, positive attitude toward college, ability to motivate students, exemplifies ideal role model
  • Have genuine interest in seeing students succeed
  • Have experience working with diverse student populations
  • Knowledge of UMKC Resources helpful, but not required
