ALUMNI & STAFF
Program Alumni
Upward Bound is a family! We pride ourselves on
making lifetime friendships and professional
relationships. Upward Bound Alumni make it their
business to stop by and share their life's paths and
experiences with the staff as well as with current
students. We are in contact with many of our alumni,
but we would like to hear from more of them. If you
are an Upward Bound Alumni, please contact our
office as soon as you can. We look forward to
hearing from you. UB Alumni are currently studying
medicine, are lawyers, in graduate school, serving
in the armed forces, are parents, educators, social
service workers, aspiring entertainers, artists, and
other dynamic professions. Contact us at

Our Staff

Natasha was born and raised in
Kansas City, MO. She attended the
KCMSD schools and was a passionate
Upward Bound student her entire high
school career. She graduated from
Lincoln College Preparatory Academy
in 1994 with full scholarships to
four universities. After 3 ˝ short
years, she graduated summa cum laude
from Jackson State University in
1997 with a BA in English and a
Certification in English Education
grades 7-12 in Missouri and
Mississippi. In 1998, she attended
the University of Wisconsin-Madison
for graduate school and later the
UKMC. In addition to being a
participant in this Upward Bound
program, Ms. El-Scari has held
various positions which include:
Language Arts Support Specialist,
Senior Seminar Instructor, English
and Creative Writing Instructor for
Summer Academy, Assistant Director
and is currently the Project
Director of the program. She has a
personal as well as professional
love for the program.

Ms. Katherine I. Painter was born at
Camp LeJune, North Carolina Regional
Naval Hospital. As the daughter of
an active-duty Marine, she was
raised in North Carolina, Tennessee,
Kansas and Missouri. Ms. Painter
graduated from Gallatin High School,
Gallatin, Missouri, in May of 1996
in the top 20% of her class with a
3.8 GPA. She then went on to Truman
State University in Kirksville, MO
to pursue a Biology/ Pre-Med.
degree. After a year at Truman, she
decided transfer to the University
of Missouri-Columbia and changed her
degree to Psychology/ Pre-Med. She
received her Bachelors of Arts in
Psychology in December of 2000 and
was then accepted into the Sinclair
School of Nursing. After a year and
a half on the nursing tract, she
made a difficult decision to take a
break from school and went to work
full-time for the Missouri
Department of Mental Health. While
working in the mental health field,
Ms. Painter gained valuable
experience working with people of
diverse backgrounds and with varied
life experiences. Her hobbies
include: listening to music,
reading, and sports.
