SENIOR
SUCCESS SEMINAR
Upward Bound Program has set
several goals for the Senior Seminar. One main goal
is to help participants prepare for the college
admission process and subsequent rigors of higher
education. The methodologies employed to accomplish
this task include critical thinking activities, time
management models, and goal setting exercises.
Additionally, more
specific goals of the seminars are addressed as
follows:
Resources for successful admission to a university
Timetables for admissions decisions
Assistance in scholarship searches and understanding
of award letters
Staying in a college
Relevance of meeting pertinent deadlines in the
admissions, and scholarship process
Ways
to communicate with college personnel
Identifying fears of the first generation students
Using campus resources
College Freshman vocabulary
What
college is, the real deal?
Maintaining the senior Portfolio
Securing
as much scholarship money as possible.
Seniors are required to maintain a portfolio. This
working document contains information on
biographical data, college inquiries, financial aid,
personal and academic achievements, and other
relevant information. Additionally, this working
resource serves as a reference and record of all
college inquiry, applications, scholarships, etc.
The portfolio is reviewed regularly by the senior
seminar instructor and administrative staff. This
portfolio is a guide or reference of biographical
information, academic accomplishments, volunteer
service, and a resource tool for higher education
needs. Perfect attendance, punctuality and time on
task provides students with a professional
up-to-date completed portfolio.
