Dr. Barkis received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1988. She is a licensed psychologist in both Missouri and Kansas, and a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Kansas. Dr. Barkis has worked in both University settings and in private practice. Her areas of special interest include treatment for anxiety, cross-cultural counseling, organizational psychology, personality styles, and relationship counseling. She is also a trained mediator. She practices a blend of cognitive-behavioral and solutions-oriented therapy. She has traveled extensively in China and likes to explore new cultures. Tennis or an evening of cards are outlets for her competitive side. Watch out for puns. |

Dr. Abels received his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri
- Kansas City in 2001. He is licensed as a psychologist in Missouri
and Kansas. He has worked extensively with traditional and
non-traditional age college students, international students,
students of color, students with disabilities and other
under-represented populations. He is trained as a generalist and
feels comfortable working with a wide range of psychological
concerns. His experiences include working with issues of abuse
and trauma, academic skills development, career development,
depression and other mood disorders, issues related to physical
disability, family of origin problems, grief and loss, identity
development, relationship issues, spirituality, and stress
management. He works from a holistic framework that incorporates
person-centered, interpersonal, cognitive-behavioral, and
insight-oriented theories with the goal of identifying and
developing individual strengths that will empower individuals to
more effectively deal with their presenting concerns. In his
spare time he enjoys exploring nature and the healing and
calming splendor that it offers. |

Dr. Ingersoll received his doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1990. He is currently a full-time staff psychologist, has been employed with Counseling, Health, and Testing since 1992, and is a licensed psychologist in Missouri. He is the liaison to the School of Medicine and the School of Pharmacy, and currently co-facilitates training in the assessment area. Specialization areas include psychological assessment, health psychology, individual psychotherapy, and relaxation training for improving academic performance. Dr. Ingersoll's theoretical frame of reference draws from his training in contemporary self psychology and Jungian analysis, as well as studies into the nature of the human change process. |

Dr. Heather Noble received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of North Texas in 2003. She became a licensed psychologist in the state of Missouri in 2004. She is presently the coordinator of the Assess for Success program and a staff psychologist. She works with adults, both affiliated with UMKC and within the Kansas City community. Her special interests include college students' development, psychological testing, group counseling, organizational consulting, and teaching undergraduate and graduate students in psychology. Her approach to individual counseling includes a solutions-focus with a humanistic foundation, and her supervision model is developmental in nature. |

Dr. Roodman received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 2000 and has been a licensed psychologist in Missouri since 2001. She believes in the strength of group psychotherapy to help clients grow, learn, and make significant changes in their life. She coordinates the groups program at the Center, which includes several process therapy groups and support groups. She works directly with Residential Life to provide services to
residential students. She enjoys presenting on topics such as stress and time management, test anxiety,
and relaxation strategies. She describes her theoretical orientation
as eclectic, but draws heavily from cognitive behavioral,
interpersonal process, and mindfulness practice. Therapy interests
include multicultural counseling, group psychotherapy, women's
issues, eating issues, trauma, anxiety, and couple's therapy. She
sees supervision as a collaborative process between therapist and
emerging professional. |

Dr. Lynette Sparkman-Barnes received her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Illinois School of Professional Psychology in 1996. She is licensed in both Missouri and Kansas. She is part-time at the Center, and continues to work in the areas of community mental health, school-based mental health, and private practice. Her areas of clinical and research interest include multicultural counseling, consultation and outreach, and psychology and religion. Her theoretical framework is heavily influenced by systems and solution-focused theories. Dr. Sparkman-Barnes also is an ordained Minister in the African Methodist Episcopal Church. |

Dr. Theoharidis received her doctorate from the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 2003. She is a
licensed psychologist in Missouri. She is part-time
at the center. Dr. Theoharidis has worked in university and hospital settings as well as private practice. Her areas of special interest and experience include eating disorders, issues of abuse and trauma, self-esteem and identity development. Her approach to counseling incorporates person-centered, interpersonal, and cognitive-behavioral theories.
She is the Chair of the Eating Disorder Treatment Team here at the center. |

Dr. Pierce received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology
from The University of Akron in 2005 and is a licensed psychologist in Missouri. She has worked at several university counseling centers in the Midwest, with clients from diverse backgrounds and with a wide variety of concerns. As a generalist, Dr.
Pierce feels comfortable working with a wide variety of concerns. In addition to the developmental concerns experienced by many college students, her special interests include depression, anxiety, relationship concerns, grief/loss, family of origin issues, spirituality, diversity issues, and career development concerns. She coordinates outreach activities and enjoys presenting on stress management, goal-setting, motivation, life transitions, and other prevention-focused topics. She practices from a humanistic/ developmental framework, incorporating elements of cognitive-behavioral
and person-centered therapies, as well as multicultural counseling principles. She is also very interested in supervision and training,
and supervises from a developmental framework. Rachel is an
avid fan of all Ohio sports teams but is particularly enthusiastic
about the Ohio State Buckeyes. |

Dale Voigt-Catlin received her Master's degree in Clinical Social Work from the University of Kansas in 1986 and has been licensed as a clinical specialist social worker since 1992. She is licensed in both Kansas and Missouri . Dale has previously worked in university counseling centers at the University of Kansas and at Missouri Southern State University. Her areas of focus
within the alcohol and drug arena include prevention, assessment,
counseling, community referrals, and consultation to the campus
faculty and staff. Dale's approach is strengths-based using a motivational model of practice. She believes in the dignity and worth of all people and in their capacities to learn and grow in healthy ways together.
Family, outdoor activities, music, and promotion of peace and social
justice are important ingredients in Dale's life. |

Dr. Risk graduated from Howard University Medical School in 1976. He completed a psychiatric residency at the Menninger School of Psychiatry in 1979 and graduated from the Topeka Institute for Psychoananlysis in 1992. He is board certified in psychiatry. He is medical director at the Wyandot Center for Community Behavioral Healthcare, Inc., a Clinical Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Kansas University Medical Center, and a part-time staff psychiatrist at the Counseling Center at UMKC. His interests include group psychotherapy and psychodynamic psychotherapy. |

Krista is a pre-doctoral psychology intern at the counseling
center. She received her Bachelor's Degrees in Psychology and
Dance from the University of Iowa and her Master of Arts Degree
from the University of Denver. She is a doctoral candidate in
Clinical Psychology at the University of Denver. Krista has
experience working with children, adolescents, adults, couples,
and families in a variety of settings. She has worked with
multiple diverse populations, including immigrants from Mexico.
She conducts therapy in Spanish. Krista believes that people
can change by better understanding themselves, including their
feelings and behavior. She approaches therapy from a
psychodynamic point of view, but integrates
cognitive-behavioral, behavioral, and developmental aspects into
her work. Her interests are very broad and include focusing on
relationships, characterological difficulties, working with
diverse populations, conducting therapy in Spanish, long-term
and brief therapies, spirituality, outreach, assessment, and
dance/movement therapy. Krista is an die-hard college football
fan and loves to spend time with loved ones and being outdoors
running, hiking, and skiing. |

Alice is a pre-doctoral intern at the CHTC. She received her
B.A. in Psychology from Carleton College in Northfield,
Minnesota, and is currently a doctoral candidate in Counseling
Psychology at the University of Iowa. Alice has worked with
adults, adolescents, and children in a variety of settings,
including a university counseling center, a community mental
health center, and an outpatient psychology clinic in a major
hospital. Her approach to counseling is primarily
client-centered, and focuses on the relationship between the
client and the counselor as the main agent of change. She also
integrates some cognitive-behavioral strategies into her work.
Alice’s clinical interests include psychological assessment,
recovery from sexual trauma, women’s issues, and multicultural
considerations in counseling. In her free time, Alice enjoys
traveling, camping, cooking (and eating!), board games, and
spending time with friends and family.

James Wanser received his degree in Educational Administration at the University of Missouri-Kansas City in 1981. He is the Director of Testing Services and Associate Director of the Counseling, Health, & Testing Center. He is a licensed counselor by the National Board for Certified Counselors. He coordinates the national group testing programs for admission, licensure, and certification that are sponsored on campus. He also coordinates psychological/career testing for clients and educational programs. His interests include educational administration, psychological testing, diversity initiatives, LGBT programming, career counseling, and learning disability assessment.

Shannon is a graduate of the University of
Missouri-Columbia class of 2006. She taught English in South
Korea immediately following graduation. She is a first semester
student in the Higher Education Administration program here at
UMKC in the School of Education. Her personal hobbies include
reading, knitting, cooking and playing Scrabble. Shannon is the
smiling face that greets test takers on their day of testing.
