The Student Health and Wellness Service is funded through the student health fee. There is no charge for a visit and assessment. Some services or laboratory testing may involve a charge. Students will be made aware of any charges before they are incurred. Prescriptions may be filled at any pharmacy and may be covered by the student's health insurance if available. Students are invited to fill their prescriptions at the Student Health and Wellness Pharmacy.

Students who have health insurance through Student Assurance Services (the UMKC Student Health policy) will maximize their benefits by visiting the Student Health and Wellness Service first.

Items for which there is a charge include:

  1. Laboratory tests that are sent to the reference lab. Charges for the most common tests are listed below. In addition, there is a $5.00 lab draw fee. Please ask about the charge for a particular test not listed below.

  2. Immunizations -- See listing below

  3. Tuberculosis testing -- $8.00, must be read 48-72 hours following administration

  4. Depo-Provera injections -- $45

  5. Allergy injections -- $5 each, patient provides serum

  6. In house labs -- Influenza, $18.00; Mono, $5.00; Strep screen, $5.00; Pregnancy tests, $3.00; Urinalysis, $3.00, Glucose test, $3.00; Hemoglobin test, $3.00; Hemoscreen, $3.00; H. Pylori, $12.00

  7. Albuterol treatment -- $5.00

IMMUNIZATIONS

The following immunizations are available onsite. If you need an immunization not listed, inquire at the clinic as to whether it can be ordered for you and the cost. The immunization cost is the drug cost plus a $5 administration fee. All fees are per dose.

 

Hepatits A $24.00
Hepatitis B $30.00
Meningitis $87.00
MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) $42.00
Tetanus $17.00
Varicella $85.00

Antibody Titers: May also be drawn for rubella and varicella to indicate whether immunity exists. See laboratory fees for costs.

Hepatitis A: Available for those who may be traveling to areas at risk for Hepatitis A. Recommend 2 doses at 6 month intervals.

Hepatitis B: Series of 3, 1st dose, 2nd one month later, 3rd five months later. Now given in infancy. Missing a dose does not require starting over.

Meningitis: Recommended for college students, particularly those living in residence halls; one dose, repeat every 3-5 years.

MMR (measles, mumps, rubella): 2 doses for all college students born after 1956. (Now given at 12-15 months and prior to entering school.)

Tetanus, Diptheria (Td): booster every ten years. Usually given as a series to infants with a booster at age 11-12.

Varicella: Recommended for college students without a history of chichen pox or without immunization or without negative antibody titer: 2 doses one month apart.

TUBERCULOSIS (TB) TESTING

Many health care and education programs require current tuberculosis testing to rule out active tuberculosis. Tb testing is done by injecting PPD (Purified Protein Derivative) under the skin and reading the results in 48 to 72 hours. Annual Tb tests are required of health care students.
