General Student Health Questions

Who provides services in Student Health?

Our office is staffed by nurse practitioners, registered nurses, a pharmacist, a health educator, an administrative assistant and a secretary. All are fully trained for their positions.  A collaborating physician is in the office weekly. Physician services are available by referral from the nurse practitioners. Student Health can manage most health problems that are typical for a health office.

Do you do PAP smears and/or female GYN exams?

Yes, we do. The lab fee for a pap smear is either $20 or $35 depending on your selected service and you need an appointment. (See Women’s Health Services page)

Can a nurse practitioner prescribe medications and where can I go to get the prescription filled?

Yes, a nurse practitioner can prescribe medication as appropriate.  Students can have their prescriptions filled at the Student Health Pharmacy or any other pharmacy.

Can I receive immunizations in Student Health?

Yes, you can. The immunizations available Hepatitis A and B, Human Papilloma Virus, Meningitis, MMR, Tetanus (TdaP), Varicella (chicken pox). Tuberculosis testing is also available.  Please call for further information or check the fee page for fees.  Some other immunizations may be available by request.

Can I get a prescription for birth control or receive a Depo injection at the clinic?

Yes, Student Health providers do write prescriptions for birth control and Depo Provera.  You must make an appointment with a nurse practitioner.

Is there a charge to be seen at the Health Center?

No, there is no charge for the visit.  There may be charges for laboratory testing or certain procedures.

How can I pay my bill, if I have one?

You can pay and fees in Student Health by cash, check or a charge to your student account (sorry, credit card payment is not available at this time). Any bills charged to the student's UMKC account will need to be paid in the cashier's office. The health center cannot accept the payment.

Do I need my insurance for Student Health?

No, you do not need insurance to be seen in Student Health and Student Health does not bill insurance plans. We will be glad to provide you with an itemized check out sheet that you can use for insurance reimbursement.

What hours are you open?

Our clinic is open Monday through Friday.
Morning appointment hours are from 8:30 am until 12:00 pm.
Afternoon appointment hours on Monday, Thursday, and Friday are 1:30 pm to 5:00 pm.
Afternoon appointment hours on Tuesday and Wednesday are 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

Do I need to make an appointment?

Yes.  We see patients on an appointment basis.

When is your lunch hour and are you open during lunch?

The clinic lunch hour is from 12:30-1:30 everyday, and we do not see patients during this time.

Do you see staff or family members of students in the clinic?

No, Student Health services are limited to UMKC students with the exceptions of immunizations and flu shots.

Do you provide emergency care in the clinic?

No, we do not provide emergency care.  If you feel you have an emergency please go to a hospital emergency room.  As always, dialing 911 in the event of a medical emergency will bring you immediate help.  St. Luke’s Hospital at 43rd and Wornall is the ER closest to UMKC.

How do I obtain information about student health insurance?

Students who take classes on campus (not through the internet) and their dependents are eligible to apply for student health insurance. You may pick up a student health insurance brochure at UMKC Student Health located at 4825 Troost. You may also pick up a brochure at the Cashiers office or in the brochure rack outside the Student Life office. E-mail Student Health and Wellness your name and address at studenthealth@umkc.edu and we will send you a brochure. You may also obtain a brochure by writing to the Servicing Agent

Can I pick up my prescription when the pharmacy is closed?

No, a licensed pharmacist must be on duty for a patient to pick up a prescription.

Do you have all medications?

The Student Health Pharmacy has most common medications. Other medications may be specially ordered by the pharmacist.  We do not carry any controlled substances. Please call 235-6103 with any special medication questions.

Do Student Health medications have a discounted price?

The Student Health Pharmacy offers many medications at lower prices to students, however there are some medications that cannot be purchased at a lower price and therefore the Pharmacy cannot pass any discount on to the student.

Can I call for prescription prices?

We welcome calls about prescription prices and will do our best to quote a price over the phone, if not we will take your name and phone number and get back to you as soon as possible.

Who can use your services?

We are currently open to UMKC students only.

How do I transfer a prescription from another pharmacy to UMKC Student Health Pharmacy?

Either call or come by the pharmacy with the prescription number, name of the current pharmacy and phone number. Staff will call the pharmacy and transfer your prescription to the Student Health Pharmacy.

Do you bill insurance for prescriptions?

The UMKC Student Accident & Sickness Insurance Plan is accepted and if you have other insurance for prescription coverage, please call to verify that we take your insurance.

How can I pay for my prescription?

We accept cash, check or you may bill your student account for prescriptions.

How can I refill my prescription?

Your prescription is assigned a unique prescription number that can be called in to the pharmacy at 816-235-6103 for a refill. You may also e-mail your name and prescription number to reinertc@umkc.edu. Keep in mind that e-mail is not a confidential means of communication.
