Purchasing Academic Regalia
Undergraduates must purchase cap and gown at the University Bookstore. Masters students purchase cap, gown and hood from the University Bookstore. PhD candidates should purchase their regalia from the University Bookstore.  It is critical that you purchase the regalia appropriate for your program.
The University Bookstore’s Graduation Fair is a great one-stop shopping opportunity for all of your commencement needs.  The fair will be Tuesday, March 8, 10 a.m.-7 p.m. and Wednesday, March 9, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the UMKC Bookstore in the Student Union Building.
Regalia and other graduation-related items can be purchased at the Bookstore outside of the Graduation Fair dates.
Please be sure to try on your regalia (both cap and gown) before the day of graduation.  You may wish to steam or iron your gown and hood (master’s and PhD candidates only) prior to wear.
Arrive at the Bloch Executive Hall 2nd floor Atrium NO LATER THAN 3:15 p.m., please dress in your cap and gown. Pick up name card from tables and find your place in line. Leave all personal items with family members, as there will not be a secure place to store these items in the Bloch School.
At this time you will receive instructions on how to walk in processional, where to sit in Swinney, and how to walk across the stage for the reading of names.
We will process from the Bloch Executive Hall to Swinney Recreation Center at 3:55 p.m. sharp.  
Commencement ceremony begins at 4 p.m.

RSVP Information
Your RSVP at the Commencement website,, is critical in helping us to plan for this event.  On the RSVP site you will have the opportunity to add a phonetic spelling of your name and indicate the number of guests who will be attending.
Please note that while tickets are not required and students are not limited in the number of guests they can invite, seating in Swinney Recreation Center is limited.

Parking, including handicapped, is available at the Atterbury Student Success Center, Cherry Street Parking Structure, Performing Arts Center and all other campus parking lots. Maps and directions available online:

Special Arrangements
If you anticipate you or your guests needing special arrangements such as wheelchair access or assistance for the hearing impaired, please note this on the RSVP website or contact the Commencement Coordinator.

Graduation Photos
A representative from GradImages will attend. They will take handshake and posed photos during the ceremony. They will e-mail proofs and ordering information within four weeks of the ceremony. If you do not receive your mailing, visit their Web site at, or contact them directly at 800-628-4509.

Diplomas and Transcripts
Students will receive a diploma cover at the commencement ceremony.  Diplomas and official transcripts reflecting the conferral of your degree will be available from the Registration and Record Office, room 115 Administrative Center, starting June 13, 2016.  To pick up your diploma you will be asked to provide photo ID.  Information on requesting official transcripts is available at  Any diplomas not picked up in person will be mailed to the address listed on your application for graduation starting Monday, June 27, 2016.
Hooding Instructions for Ph.D./I.Ph.D. Candidates (Doctoral Students Only)
Candidates should have hood across right arm as they approach the stage.  Hooders should be at center stage.  Under the table with diploma covers, there is a small box to stand upon if needed.  Hooders receive hood from student.  Faculty should face the audience, and student will also face audience until hooding is completed.  Student walks in front of the faculty member, turns with back to faculty member (bending at knees if taller than hooder).  Hooder drapes hood over shoulders of candidate and adjusts hood so colors are showing.  Once done, faculty member taps student on shoulder.  Student and faculty member shake hands; student goes next to Dean and Chancellor to shake hands, receive diploma cover, and exit stage.  Student returns to seat and sits down.  Hooder returns to seat.
