Purchasing Academic Regalia
Regalia may be purchased at the Graduation Fair on Tuesday, October 11th (10:00am to 7:00pm) and Wednesday, October 12th (8:00am to 5:00pm) located in the new Student Union UMKC Bookstore. A 10% discount is available during the Fair. The academic dress for your specific degree must be purchased, which includes cap, gown, tassel (and hood for graduate students).
Appropriate regalia must be worn as follows:
- Caps are worn horizontally, with the tassel on the right side
- Masters and Ph.D. degree candidates should wear the appropriate hood
- Ph.D. candidates, hood should be draped to right arm (read hooding instructions found at the bottom of this page)
- Women wear caps throughout the ceremony - Men remove caps for the National Anthem
- Please wear caps during the rest of the ceremony and the recessional
Parking
Graduates and guests can park in various locations on campus. The parking lots in closest proximity to Swinney Recreation Center are the University Center and Performing Arts Center. Refer to the UMKC Commencement website for maps and other information.

If your name card is marked with "Latin Honors" indicating you are graduating with "Summa, Magna, or cum Laude," please pick up your medallion at the information table in Pierson. The medallion is your to keep.

You are required to log on to the Commencement Website to verify the spelling of your name and RSVP if you intend to walk.
Tickets are not required, however seating is limited so please be sure to arrive early to ensure that your are able to get a spot.
Purchasing Academic Regalia
Regalia may be purchased at the Graduation Fair on Tuesday, October 11th (10:00am to 7:00pm) and Wednesday, October 12th (8:00am to 5:00pm) located in the UMKC Bookstore. There will be a late fee for orders after the deadline.
Robing and Schedule
Arrive at the Old Swinney Gym no later than 3:15pm with your regalia. Bring only the academic regalia you will be wearing. Arrange to have your guests take your coat, valuables, etc. There will not be any security available to protect your personal belongings in the Pierson Auditorium, and you should not plan to carry anything with you into the Swinney Recreation Center. Student will process into Swinney Recreation Center at 4:00 PM.

TICKETS
No tickets required, but students should limit guests to 7. Seating in White Recital Hall is limited. Please RSVP at the Commencement website and indicate how many guests you plan to bring.
SPECIAL NEEDS
Please notify the Commencement coordinator as soon as possible if your guests have special needs, such as wheelchair or handicapped seating.
REGALIA
BA, BS, MA,and MS candidates must purchase cap and gown at the University Bookstore. See Bookstore website for information regarding GRAD FAIR, March 13 & 14.
Ph.D. candidates should contact the SBS Commencement coordinator regarding regalia rental.

COMMENCEMENT SCHEDULE
12:15 pm: All candidates must arrive at White Recital Hall in the Performing Arts Center NO LATER THAN 12:15 PM, dressed in cap and gown. Candidates should go directly to Room 326 in the PAC, which is located down the hallway on the right side of WRH.
In Room 326, you will pick up a name card, and find your place in line behind the appropriate sign based upon the number on the card. Leave all personal belongings with family members in SRC. Candidates should not carry any items during the processional.
At this time you will receive instructions on how to walk, where to sit, and how to walk across the stage for the reading of names.
12:45pm: Faculty marshals will lead all students to line up in front of WRH.
1:00pm sharp: Students will begin processing into WRH-Commencement ceremony begins. Ceremony will last 1 to 1 1/2 hours. Light reception will follow ceremony in lobby.
DIPLOMAS AND TRANSCRIPTS
Diplomas and transcripts with degrees posted will be available (within 30 days) for pick-up in the Registration and Records office for students who do not have a transcript hold. A transcript hold will prevent a student from receiving an official transcript as well as their diploma
LATIN HONORS
Students with anticipated Latin Honors or Biology Honors will be notified by the SBS Commencement coordinator. Latin Honors medals and Biology Honors Cards will be available at the Commencement Ceremony, or you may make arrangements to pick up the medal before the ceremony.
GRADUATION
Participation in the Commencement Ceremony is not a guarantee that a student will graduate and receive a diploma. Fulfilling degree requirements for graduation depends upon final grades, which are not posted until the week after Commencement. It is possible to walk at Commencement and not graduate. Please contact the SBS Commencement Coordinator if you have questions about graduation requirements.

Schedule for the Day of Commencement, December 16, 2011

The Dean’s Commencement Luncheon Reception, 5th Floor of Flarsheim Hall, 5110 Rockhill Road, KCMO 64110 on the UMKC Campus.
Please save the date and invite your family and friends to attend with you. Official invitations will be sent to all December Graduates via email in late November requesting an RSVP and the number of guests attending with you.
Your family will enjoy attending if they are able, so please ask them to save this time to spend with you.

Bring only your cap, gown, and tassel.
Undergraduate degree recipients wear their tassels on the right side of the mortarboard.
Graduate Degree recipients wear their tassels on the left side of the mortarboard.
Tassels for Computer Science are gold and Engineering is orange. The Bookstore shelved them side by side for ease of locating.
You may wish to use bobby pins to hold your mortarboard in place and safety to pins to secure your regalia. Please bring them with you.
4:00 PM
Commencement Ceremony begins.
General Information
- Graduates MUST NOT carry anything in their hands during the ceremony. Give your personal belongings, such as purses, cameras and other possessions, to your guests for safekeeping. If you have no guests to take your things, try to plan accordingly, but there will be a repository to hold them during the ceremony. Your items can be retrieved from the CME Department immediately after the ceremony. There is no food, drink, or smoking allowed inside Swinney Recreation Center. - You will not receive your actual diploma during the ceremony. Diplomas will be available for pick up after 45 days from the end of the semester at the Registrar’s Office, Room 115, 5115 Oak Street, Kansas City, MO 64110. After 60 days, diplomas will be mailed to the address provided on your application for graduation. If you have an address change, please update the information in Pathway.
- There will be no time for personal pictures prior to the Ceremony. Arrangements for taking personal photographs can be made after the Ceremony.

Purchasing Regalia
Regalia may be purchased at the UMKC Bookstore. The academic dress for the DDS and Ph.D. doctoral degree will be rented and the academic dress for the undergraduate BSDH and Master degrees must be purchased. Tassel color for DDS and BSDH degrees is lilac, and the tassel color for Ph.D. is Gold. The hood color for the DDS degree is lilac, certificate students will wear the hood color from their individual schools, and for the Ph.D. the hood is royal blue.
All graduating students must attend the GRAD FAIR (March 8 & 9) in the Student Union on the Volker Campus to order and/or purchase your regalia.

Students are asked to please RSVP to the Commencement Website upon receiving an email invitation from the Provost. Tickets are not required and you are welcome to bring as many guests as you like.

When responding to the RSVP site, please include the phonetic pronunciation of your full name to help announcers correctly announce your name during the ceremony. No tickets are required and you are welcome to bring as many guests as you like.
Purchasing Regalia
Students should plan to attend the Grad Fair held in the UMKC Bookstore on October 11 and October 12 to purchase and/or order regalia. The academic dress for your specific degree must be purchased, which includes cap, gown, (and hood for graduate students). The bookstore offers a 10% discount on those two dates. If you plan to borrow someone else's regalia, it is important to have the correct colors and CRITICAL that you RSVP for the ceremony. Without a correct count, the correct number of seats cannot be reserved for candidates causing many problems during the ceremony.

Normally the noise level in the robing room is high. When you are asked to pay attention and listen to instructions, please do so.

PARKING
Parking for the Kansas City Music Hall is available in the Auditorium Plaza Garage, city-owned lots, and privately owned lots. Event parking rates at city-owned lots are $5 to $8. Rates at privately owned lots vary by location and by event. Many parking garages are open 24 hours and most will be open to facilitate attendees of major events. Availability changes depending on the time of day. Metered, on street parking is available and is free evenings and weekends. There are also surface lots throughout downtown Kansas City.

When responding to the RSVP site, please include the phonetic pronunciation of your full name to help announcers to correctly announce your name during the ceremony. MD Candidates: If your name was mispronounced on Match Day, please contact Dr. Brenda Rogers at (816) 235-1782 and leave a voicemail with a clear, slow pronunciation of your names as you would like it to be read during the ceremony.
No tickets are required for the MSA and Bioinformatics ceremony. However, due to space limitations, MSA and Bioinformatics graduates are asked to limit the number of guests to seven. No tickets are required for the MD ceremony and the candidates are welcome to brings as many guests as they prefer.

The academic dress for the Pharm.D. and Ph.D. degree candidates is rented and the academic dress for the undergraduate BSPS degree candidates must be purchased. Tassel color for BSPS and Pharm.D. degrees is olive green and tassel color for Ph.D. is gold. The hood color for the Pharm.D. degree is olive green and the hood color for the Ph.D. degree is royal blue. Regalia must be purchased through the UMKC Bookstore.

Accessibility
There will be disability parking spaces available in the Performing Arts Center [PAC] Parking Lot. Drivers should drop off disabled individuals at the back entrance of Swinney Recreation Center for easier access and then park in the PAC lot. Drivers with disabled guests should go up the circle driveway that is next to the track and on the north side of Swinney [closest to the PAC]. University Ambassadors will be available to receive guests and take them to seating in Swinney Recreation Center.
Students who anticipate needing any special arrangements for family and friends who are in wheelchairs or need special assistance for hearing impaired should contact Shelly Janasz at 816-235-2400, no later than December 2nd, so arrangements can be made. Provide total number of guests in your party as well.
