Neighborhood 101

Wrapping up UMKC's Master Plan process marked an exciting point in our university's history. Under the leadership of Chancellor Gilliland and through the combined efforts of the university's internal community as well as members of the Kansas City community, the university completed a plan that would guide the physical development of the Volker and Hospital Hill campuses for years to come.

Aside from the physical changes the campus will undergo in the future, during the planning process the university recognized the direct correlation between attaining its vision of a community of learners making the world a better place and its relationship with its surrounding neighbors.

Through an executive order by the Chancellor and a position statement by the Rockhill Crest Neighborhood association and the 49/63 Neighborhood Coalition a set of commitments were developed to guide the on-going partnerships within the Rockhill Crest Neighborhood, where some students reside in university owned properties.

One of the commitments included creating an orientation program for new student residents that would focus on neighborhood living -- Neighborhood 101. Throughout the day, students learn the basics of being a good neighbor. From learning the right day to set trash at curbside for collection, to reminders about being respectful of appropriate noise levels after hours, students leave the session knowing the principals of being a responsible neighbor and understanding the vital role they play in upholding the University's commitments to its surrounding neighbors.
