UMKC Counseling CenterMarita Barkis, Ph.D.Dr. Barkis is the Director of the University of Missouri-Kansas City
Counseling, Health and Testing Center and the former director of the
Center's doctoral psychology internship training program.
She is a licensed psychologist in Missouri and Kansas and a licensed
marriage and family therapist. She received her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of
Missouri-Columbia and completed her doctoral psychology internship at the
Kansas City Veterans Administration Medical Center. Most of her career has
been in university counseling centers with the past 19 years at UMKC. Besides her therapy and administrative work, she also maintains a
small part-time private practice and has consulted with organizations on a
variety of topics. In her early career she was a junior high school
counselor. She holds a B.A. degree in
English with training in secondary education. She is interested in multiculturalism, anxiety, dealing with
distressed students, interpersonal relations, tennis, travel, family and a
good laugh.
