Fast Facts

  • There are approximately 175 undergraduates in the Department of Art & Art History
  • 25 percent are studying art, 15 percent are studying art history, and 60 percent are studying studio art
  • Average size of a studio art class is 15 students
  • Art history lecture courses at the 200- and 300-level average about 40 students; and at the 400-level, art history courses average 15 students

  • UMKC's campus is located in the heart of Kansas City and within walking distance of one of the most distinguished museums in the nation, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. The Crossroads Arts District and the Urban Culture Project offer additonal gallery activities around the revitalized downtown.

Admission Requirements

  • The requirements vary according to which degree is sought.
  • For the art history major and for freshman studio art applicants, there are no special requirements beyond those for admission to the University.
  • Transfer students entering the program will meet with an art history advisor to discuss their transcripts and evaluate course equivalencies for advanced placement.

Major Courses

  • Nine art history courses:
  • Survey of Western Art I, II and III (9 hrs)
  • 2 non-Western Art History courses at the 300 or 400-level (6 hrs)
  • 3 courses at the 400-level with at least two different faculty members (9 hrs)
  • college-mandated capstone course (Art 482)
  • 9 hrs of studio electives
  • 12 hrs each in two Departments in the College of Arts & Sciences (recommended: English Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, History, or Philosophy); and at least one year of the same foreign language.

Other Programs Available

  • Bachelor of arts degrees in art and studio art
  • Master of arts degrees in art history and studio art
  • Interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in art history
  • The dual degree program in studio art/secondary education for those who wish to teach in middle school or high school
  • A combined major in history/art history for students interested in the influence of historical developments on art
  • An art history minor available to students majoring in other areas
 

Faculty

  • Art history faculty members are actively involved in research and the professional associations in their areas of expertise and have done the following:

    • published books and journal articles

    • received research funding from many nationally known foundations

    • curated numerous exhibitions
