Admission Requirements
- The requirements vary according to which degree is sought.
- For the art history major and for freshman studio art applicants, there are no special requirements beyond those for admission to the University.
- Transfer students entering the program will meet with an art history advisor to discuss their transcripts and evaluate course equivalencies for advanced placement.
Major Courses

- Nine art history courses:
- Survey of Western Art I, II and III (9 hrs)
- 2 non-Western Art History courses at the 300 or 400-level (6 hrs)
- 3 courses at the 400-level with at least two different faculty members (9 hrs)
- college-mandated capstone course (Art 482)
- 9 hrs of studio electives
- 12 hrs each in two Departments in the College of Arts & Sciences (recommended: English Language and Literature, Foreign Language and Literature, History, or Philosophy); and at least one year of the same foreign language.
Other Programs Available
- Bachelor of arts degrees in art and studio art
- Master of arts degrees in art history and studio art
- Interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree in art history
- The dual degree program in studio art/secondary education for those who wish to teach in middle school or high school
- A combined major in history/art history for students interested in the influence of historical developments on art
- An art history minor available to students majoring in other areas
