  • UMKC’s program is affiliated with a top 10-ranked design school, Kansas State University’s College of Architecture, Planning and Design.
  • In 2000, the National Accreditation Board declared the UMKC program a “national model for states without professional architecture degrees.”

Student Organizations

  • AIAS (American Institute of Architecture Students) is a national organization for students studying architecture and related fields. Every year students attend national and regional AIAS meetings around the country.
  • Students routinely participate in local professional organizations such as YAF (Young Architects Forum),
    AIA / KC (American Institute of Architects), WID (Women in Design) and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art lecture series.
  • SEARCH (Students Engaged in Artistic and Academic Research) supports undergraduate research at UMKC. Architectural studies students have received numerous awards at the annual spring symposium.

Admission Requirements

  • Admission into the department is selective and competitive. Students are considered on the basis of academic performance and space availability.
  • Freshmen students need to score 23 or higher on the ACT, and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Transfer students may enter with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

  • Algebra (3 hours)
  • Physics (4 hours)
  • Electives (9 hours)
    • The coursework above only reflects the first two years of study at UMKC.

  • Studio (18 hours)
  • History of the Designed Environment (9 hours)
  • Survey of the Design Professions (1 hour)
  • Building Science (3 hours)
  • Structural Systems in Architecture (6 hours)
  • Environmental Systems in Architecture (4 hours)
    • This coursework only reflects the first two years of the architectural studies curriculum at UMKC.

Faculty

  • Architectural studies faculty are practicing professionals or are engaged in scholarly and applied research.
  • The faculty have studied at top schools around the country and bring that training to the classroom. A few of the institutions represented: University of Pennsylvania, Yale University, University of California - Berkeley and Washington University.
  • Faculty serve as mentors and offer career contacts to help students enter the profession.
