Admission requirements

  • All students interested in obtaining a degree in Civil Engineering must earn an ACT score of 25 in Math and a composite ACT score of 24.
  • Transfer students must have a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) at each institution and a final term GPA of 2.0.
  • Students who do not meet the above criteria may petition for admission.


  • The UMKC School of Computing and Engineering sits in the fourth largest community of engineering firms per capita in the United States, offering the school access to outstanding faculty and advisers, and providing excellent working opportunities for the up-and-coming engineer.

Fast facts

  • The Fast Track program offers students an opportunity to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering in four years and the master’s degree the fifth year.  
  • Only ABET-accredited engineering program in the Kansas City metropolitan area 
  • 99 percent of our seniors have one or more job offers upon graduation
  • Located in the fourth largest engineering community, many firms offer students internships and part-time works while they go to school 


  • Many of our adjunct faculty work as professional engineers in the area and provide real-life expertise to our students.
  • Faculty provide many different research opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in several areas, including environmental engineering, water resources, structures and materials, and transportation.

Our civil engineering students are involved in more than 15 student organizations, including:

  • National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE)
  • National Society/Missouri Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE/MSPE)
  • Association of Civil Engineering Scholars (ACES)
  • Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE)
  • Society of Women Engineers (SWE)
  • Structural Engineers Association of Kansas & Missouri (SEAKM)
  • Tau Beta Pi (TBP) - National Engineering Honor Society 

Our civil engineering students also participate in the following team competitions:

  • Big Beam (PCI)
  • Steel Bridge (ASCE/AISC)
  • Concrete Cube (ACI)
