The School of Education has developed a close relationship with a number of public schools in the Kansas City metropolitan area, offering exceptional diversity for field experience and opportunities for observation, student teaching and demonstrations.

 

Careers

  • UMKC has well-established teacher placement procedures and activities, including an annual teacher placement day which draws districts from around the region.
  • With more than 7,000 teaching positions in the greater Kansas City area, there is always local demand. Many of our alumni teach in other states as well.
  • Many teachers go on to earn a master's degree in curriculum and instruction or in an emphasis area such as reading or special education. Others choose to do graduate work in school administration or school counseling.

Average Starting Salaries:

  • Bachelor's level graduate, $26,000 per year

Admission Requirements

  • Freshmen and transfer students may apply to UMKC as pre-education and are admitted based on general University requirements.
  • Candidates for admission to the School of Education are required to have completed the majority of their general education and pre-education coursework with a 2.75 cumulative GPA at the time of application (the priority deadline is March 1 of each year for admission the following summer).
  • Applicants who have graduated from high school within five years of admission to teacher education program must also submit a score for either the ACT or SAT exam.
  • A passing score on all sections of the College Basic Academic Subjects Examination (C-BASE) is required of all students.
