Careers

  • UMKC has well-established teacher placement procedures and activities, including an annual teacher placement day which attracts districts from around the region.
  • With more than 7,000 teaching positions in the greater Kansas City area, there is always local demand. Many of our alumni teach in other states as well.
  • Many teachers go on to earn a master's degree in curriculum and instruction or in an emphasis area such as reading or special education. Others choose to do graduate work in school administration or school counseling.

  • Bachelor's level graduate, $26,000 per year

Admission Requirements

  • Freshmen and transfer students may apply to UMKC as pre-education majors and are admitted based on general University requirements.
  • Candidates for admission to the School of Education are required to complete the majority of their general education and pre-education coursework with a 2.75 cumulative GPA at the time of application (the priority deadline is March 1 of each year for admission the following fall).
  • Applicants who have graduated from high school within five years of admission to teacher education program must also submit a score for either the ACT or SAT exam.
  • A passing score on all sections of the College Basic Academic Subjects Examination (C-BASE) is required of all students.

Faculty

  • About 96 percent of the full-time faculty members have doctoral degrees from major colleges and universities. Approximately 75 percent have classroom experience at the elementary or secondary levels, in addition to their college teaching experience.
