Admission requirements

• Prospective Geology majors should take as many classes as possible in mathematics and science during their high school years; at least one semester of calculus is ideal
• All undergraduate majors in Geology must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 2.0 in all courses taken to fulfill departmental degree requirements. This minimum GPA also applies to all credit hours transferred from other institutions.

• UMKC geology students receive a broad-based education that leads to a practical basis for professional careers in the geosciences. Geology students explore real-world geologic and environmental problems in the field and lab.
• UMKC geology program alumni have found employment in academics, government and industry in diverse fields such as oil and gas exploration and production, water resources, mining and environmental geology.

  

Fast facts

• There are approximately 85 undergraduates in geosciences degree programs; 60 percent studying environmental studies, 20 percent studying geography, 20 percent studying geology.
• Upper-level classes average 12 students.
• UMKC is home to the Center for Applied Environmental Research (CAER) and the Richard L. Sutton, Jr., M.D. Museum of Geosciences that houses over 3,000 minerals, rocks and fossils from around the world.
• Faculty who work with the center undertake research and education related to the environment and collaborate with other environmental organizations.
• Internships with CAER are available.
• Geology majors take field trips for their coursework and have opportunities to travel for field and lab research.

Faculty

• Geosciences faculty members are actively involved in research and professional associations and are internationally recognized for expertise in subjects including: earthquakes, geoarchaeology, climate change, hydrogeology, geophysics, waste management, mineral resources, environmental science, and GIS.
• Faculty members have published a number of books and professional journal articles. Their research has also been featured in Geology, National Geographic, Time, Nature, and Science.
• The department boasts a diverse faculty, who between them are conversant in 10 languages. Women comprise nearly 30 percent of faculty.

Student organizations

Geology Club offers many opportunities to:

• Meet with visiting scientists and lecturers.
• Attend special interest forums and lectures.
• Participate in geological field trips including fossil hunting, rock and mineral collecting, caving, hiking, canoeing and more.
• Attend national geological meetings and conferences.
