Admission Requirements

  • All students should take the department’s short online language placement exam and discuss the results with a German department adviser to find the most appropriate class. Instructions and a link can be found on the foreign languages department Web site.
  • Transfer students may continue their foreign language study at the next comparable level.

 

Prerequisite Courses

  • Second-Year German II (GER 221) or equivalent proficiency is required for all upper-division classes..
  • The language placement exam helps identify the appropriate level of coursework for incoming students.

 

Major Courses

  • In addition to a traditional emphasis on language and literature studies, our German courses regularly incorporate a wide variety of cultural and historical topics.
  • Whether you combine your enthusiasm for German with music, film, business, art, politics, current affairs, etc., you're sure to find classes that reflect your interests.

Other Programs Available

  • A combined German major/business minor with the Bloch School of Business. This is an ideal degree for students looking to work in international business.
  • A German minor that emphasizes German language, literature, culture and film studies.
  • A German Studies minor that combines some language learning with interdisciplinary studies of German history and culture. This program provides students the opportunity to choose from an interdisciplinary and broad array of German topics in English-language courses while working toward basic proficiency in German language.
  • A dual-degree program for students who want to teach German in middle or high school.

Faculty

Faculty members are noted authors and researchers in their fields and present their work regularly at international conferences.

  • Scott Baker, Ph.D., focuses primarily on German drama, 18th and 19th century political literature, and language teaching.
  • Larson Powell, Ph.D., works on German film, 20th century literature, and connections between music and literature.
  • Tanya Kelley, MA, has taught German at UMKC since 2001.
