Admission requirements

  • Freshmen and transfer students may apply to UMKC as pre-education majors and are admitted based on general university requirements.
  • Candidates for admission to the School of Education are required to complete the majority of their general education and pre-education coursework with a 2.75 cumulative grade point average (GPA) at the time of application (the priority deadline is March 1 of each year for admission the following fall).
  • Applicants who have graduated from high school within five years of admission to teacher education program must also submit a score for either the ACT or SAT exam.
  • A passing score on all sections of the College Basic Academic Subjects Examination (C-BASE) is required of all students.
  • Commitment to social justice and a desire to teach in an urban school.

  • IUE was the first undergraduate program of its kind in the United States
  • Urban partner schools, the Kansas City, Missouri, Kansas City, Kansas and Hickman Mills school districts, serve 50,000 K-12 students. Many of these students qualify for the free or reduced lunch program and 80-85 percent of them are members of a minority group.
  • Average class size of a junior/senior level class is 19 students

Faculty

  • Approximately 96 percent of the full-time faculty members hold doctoral degrees earned at major colleges and universities. 
  • Approximately 75 percent of full-time faculty members have classroom experience at the elementary or secondary levels in addition to their college teaching experience.
